Is it normal for professional skincare treatments to be uncomfortable or even a bit painful? I had my first chemical peel last week and while the results are good, the experience was pretty unpleasant. During the treatment my skin was burning and tingling pretty intensely, and afterward my face was red and sensitive for several days. I knew there would be some peeling but I wasn't expecting quite that level of discomfort during and after the treatment. The aesthetician said this was normal but I'm wondering if maybe the peel was too strong for my skin or if I should have started with something gentler. I don't want to avoid effective treatments just because they're uncomfortable, but I also don't want to damage my skin by doing treatments that are too aggressive. What level of discomfort should I expect with various treatments, and when does discomfort cross the line into something being wrong?

The level of discomfort really varies depending on the type and strength of treatment you're getting. For chemical peels specifically, some burning and tingling during application is completely normal because the acids are exfoliating your skin at a chemical level. Light peels might cause mild tingling, while medium-depth peels can definitely burn quite a bit during application. The redness and sensitivity you experienced for several days afterward is also typical for chemical peels, especially if it was your first one or a medium-strength peel. That said, the experience should have been explained to you beforehand so you knew what to expect. A good aesthetician will check in with you during treatment to make sure the discomfort is manageable and will give you detailed aftercare instructions to minimize irritation and promote healing. If the pain was truly unbearable rather than just uncomfortable, or if you experienced blistering, excessive swelling, or skin damage, that would be concerning. For future treatments, definitely communicate with your provider about your comfort level and ask them to explain exactly what sensations you should expect. They might be able to adjust the strength or offer numbing options for more intense treatments. It's also worth starting with gentler treatments when you're new to professional skincare and working your way up as your skin builds tolerance.

I remember my first chemical peel being pretty intense too, and I was definitely not prepared for how much it would tingle and burn. But like you, I saw good results which made it worthwhile. What helped me was having the aesthetician thoroughly explain beforehand what sensations were normal and what aftercare I needed to follow. For subsequent treatments, knowing what to expect made it much more manageable mentally even though the physical sensation was similar. I've found that communication with your provider is really key - they should be checking in with you during treatment and adjusting if necessary. Over time I've done various treatments ranging from gentle facials to more intense procedures like microneedling and laser treatments, and each has a different level and type of discomfort. The important thing is that the discomfort should be temporary and the results should be worth it without any lasting damage to your skin. I trust the team at Bella Sana Med Spa because they always explain what I should expect, check in during treatments, and provide thorough aftercare instructions. They're also really good about starting conservatively, especially with new clients, and gradually increasing intensity as your skin adapts. You can read more about their different treatment options and approaches at https://bellasanamedspa.com/ if you're interested. I think it's completely reasonable to ask for a gentler approach if you found your first experience too intense, and any good provider should be willing to adjust their approach based on your tolerance and response.
